Guidelines on Speech / Talk

•A speech is an informal or formal talk that you give to an audience.
•You give speeches during special occasions like school assemblies, student gatherings and other social occasions like weddings, anniversaries, dinners and farewell parties.

•When making speeches, you should :
* greet your audience
* give a brief opening and introduce your topic
* present your points clearly and in a systematic manner – one point at a time and elaborating effectively and adequately on each point
* Conclude your speech / talk
* Thank your audience


Model Sentences for Speeches

a) Opening Address

(i) A very good morning to the Principal, teachers and all my fellow friends. It gives me great honour to stand here in front of you all and give this speech.

(ii) Good morning to the Principal, teachers and fellow students. First and foremost, thank you for giving me an opportunity to give a speech on ‘Life Today is Better’.

b) Introducing the topic

(i) Today, I am going to talk on the topic “How to Keep Our Teeth Clean and Healthy”.
(ii) Without wasting any more time, I would like to introduce my topic today, and that is “Qualities of a Responsible Prefect”.
(iii) My talk today is entitled, “How to Prepare for Exams”.

How to make your speech interesting

(1) Involve the reader
I am sure you all know that in spite of the many road safety campaigns, the number of road accidents keeps on rising year after year.

(2) Ask questions
Did you know that more than 3000 people died on the roads last year?

(3) Provide facts and elaborate on them
Statistics reveal that the major cause of road accidents is the carelessness of the drivers themselves. This is followed by road conditions, flat tyres, vehicles which are not road worthy and others.
