Characteristics of Patrick Flynne (Potato People by Angela Wright)

a) responsible and loyal
~ sits high up in the old oak tree as a look-out for Mr Graystone and his men.
~ warns the villagers whenever he sees any signs of them
~ tries to help Sean when he is caught by the soldiers

b) desperate
~ eats anything in order to survive
~ willing to eat roots, leaves, chicks and even the meat of a dead dog

c) kind
~ helps the poor
~ shares his food with a stranger, Marie, although he does not have enough for himself

d) brave and adventurous
~ knows he is beginning a great adventure and that his life will never be the same again.
~ fights in some of the bloodiest battles in the terrible war.
~ after the war, gains the rank of captain and the respect of his men.

e) determined and hardworking
~ takes the worst jobs for the lowest pay and often goes hungry .
~ takes many years of hard work before they are accepted.

e) trusting
~ listens to Sean when he asks him to leave Ireland
~ thinks well of his friends, particularly Sean
~ believes in everything that Marie tells him

f) naive (innocent)
~ has never seen the sea, and how the rich people live
~ is unaware of the danger he is in

g) patriotic
~ although he has left Ireland forever, still remembers his country
~ never forgets what happened in Ireland
